Helene Athanasiadis was born in Melbourne, Australia in 1969.
Beginning her career in 1989 as a Fashion Design graduate from RMIT University, Helene worked within various facets of creative fashion that included costume design and photographic styling. In 1999 she took a sudden career change and enrolled in an archaeological degree at La Trobe University graduating in 2006 with a dual honours degree in Archaeology and Art History. Since then she has worked professionally as an archaeologist, archaeological technical photographer and illustrator.
Although Helene has always been creative, it has only been in the last few years that she has been able to devote much of her time to creating fine art photography and mixed media works. In both mediums she is guided by archaeological concepts; layered, stained and aged, all rendered in muted & textured tones. She is also inspired by rural landscapes and botanicals.
Helene's latest body of work explores abstract forms within her photographic compositions. By altering them through orientation and then painting and illustrating over them, Helene transforms the photograph into a single work of art.
Helene currently divides her time between Melbourne and Castlemaine in Country Victoria.
